The Swartout Family Name
|
The German/Dutch family name Swartout is classified as being of habitation origin. Habitation names are those family names which are derived from either the location of the place of residence of the initial bearer or from the name of the town or village whence he hailed. In this particular instance, the name Swartout arose from a combination of the Middle Dutch words "swart", meaning "black", and "hout", signifying "wood" or "forest". Hence, the "Swarthout" would have been a dark forest or a stand of blackwood trees, while the original bearer of the surname Swartout would have been one who dwelled near this forest. Variants of the surname Swartout include Swartwout and Swarthout. One of the earliest references to this name is a record of one Thomas Swarthout, who wed Hendrickjen Barents circa 1633 in Ouderkerk, Holland. However, research is of course ongoing and this name may have been documented even earlier than the date indicated above. While many Dutch family names have been in existence for hundreds of years, the use of hereditary surnames amongst the more isolated rural population has only become established within the last two hundred years. This name was introduced to North America at an early stage, as indicated by several entries for bearers of the name in the pension files of the American Revolutionary War. Anthony Swarthout was born on 4 July 1759 in Chester, Orange County, New York, where he enlisted in the Continental Army. His brother Ralph Swarthout also served in the New York Line, as did Aaron Swarthout, a native of Steuben County.

| Soundex: Swartout "S633" Surnames with the Same Soundex Value: Saradeth, Sarradet, Scardetta, Schrdeder, Schrodetzki, Scordato, Scrudato, Sordetto, Swarthout, Swartwood, Swartwout. The Soundex System is the method used to sort information in the National Archives Census Files. The microfilm copies stored in the National Archives contain United States Federal Census records for 1880 (paritial), 1900, 1910 and 1920 censuses. At present, only federal censuses through 1920 are open to the public. To protect the privacy of the living American people whose names appear in each schedule, population schedules are closed for 72 years after the census is taken, and are not generally available to researchers during that time. The Soundex System was devised in the 1930s in an effort to index the U.S. censuses by the way names sound. Research and Documentation Provided by Halbert's Family Heritage 24 July 1996. |
